How to file an amended tax return?
After filing your tax return, you may have either missed including certain expenses or found errors on the filed return. This may include deductions, income, credits, dependents etc. A form 1040 X needs to be completed and filed with the Internal revenue service within :
- 3 years from the date original tax return was timely filed or
- Within two years from the date the person pays the tax – usually April 15 – whichever is later.

- Paying additional tax : If you owe additional tax, pay it as soon as possible to avoid interest and penalties.
- Multiple year amendments : Separate form 1040 X is required to be filed for each year that is being amended.
